2.1. Learning goals

  • Being able to meet, analyse and evaluate the relationship between society and education.
  • Being able to understand the links between the social system and the educational subsystem.
  • Being able to describe, relate and interpret the impact of different family contexts in education.
  • Being able to analyse and evaluate the relationship between the school, family and community for the development of integral education.
  • To know the Spanish educational system and its evolution within the framework of the European Union and the state of autonomies.
  • Being able to Identify, recognise and to apply the rules on schools at corresponding levels.
  • Being able to Identify and assess the structure and processes of secondary schools.
  • Being able to analyse , from a critical perspective , the role of teachers at this time: their duties, professional development and ethical commitment.
  • To know the basic elements and processes of improvement actions in schools.

2.2. Importance of learning goals

This course assumes the formation of the specific core competence for the future teacher integrating him or her into the teaching profession, knowing the context in which it is carried out , with particular reference to the school, the social, political and administrative framework and the interrelationship between society - family - education.

5.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on active participation, case studies, teamwork etc. that favors the development of communicative skills and critical thinking. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practical activities, practice sessions, autonomous work, tutorials, and academic guidance.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

5.2. Learning tasks

The course includes 4 ECTS organized according to:

  • Lectures (2 ECTS: 20 hours). The professor presents theoretical contents
  • Practice sessions (2 ECTS: 20 hours). They can involve discussion and presentation of case studies, practical work outside the classroom (field work or visits), and seminars.
  • Autonomous work (47 hours). Students do tasks such as autonomous study, reading of the course book, preparation of practice sessions and seminars, and summative assignments.
  • Tutorials (1 ECTS: 10 hours). Professor's office hours can be used to solved doubts and to follow-up students’ work.
  • Assessment (0.3 ECTS: 3 hours). Final examination.

5.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

  • Topic 0. Introduction
  • Topic 1. Society of information and education
  • Topic 2. Society, family and Education
    • 2.1. Introduction: Multiple socializations.
    • 2.2. Primary Socialization: Family configurations and their relation wtih the educational system.
    • 2.3. Secondary Socialization. Peer relationships. Multiculturality. Gender relationships.
  • Topic 3. Social functions of Education
  • Topic 4. The centres of secondary education, vocational trainings and professional education.
    • 4.1. The Spanish education system and its legislation.
    • 4.2. Structure of secondary education, vocational training, language, art and sport Education: compulsory and post-compulsory education.
    • 4.3. Schools: structure and processes. Relationships in the educational community: families and teachers.
